Our rugs are created in collaboration with designers whose work hangs in the world’s greatest collections and sets records at Sotheby’s and Christie’s, including Peter Doig, whose paintings have sold for as much as $86 million at auction. They furnish the homes of Oscar-winning directors, multi-generational American billionaire families, Indian cabinet ministers, and the CEOs of Europe’s most prominent luxury houses. They line the floors of iconic landmarks, including all 200 rugs at the Chelsea Hotel in New York City, and rest inside the Golden Temple in Amritsar, covering both levels of its central sanctum, where the original Guru Granth Sahib resides.

This reach extends beyond private homes and landmarks. We have served as partner, consultant and collaborator to the US Department of Defense’s AfghanMade Project and His Majesty King Charles III’s Turquoise Mountain in Afghanistan, and worked alongside USAID to establish large-scale rug manufacturing units there for the country’s economic revival.

ARES is the flagship company of the Sahani Group, whose foundations were laid in 1910, when Sardar Prem Singh Sahani established Hind Co. in Isfahan. Over the decades that followed, the Group expanded into transportation, international trade, hospitality, real estate and organised retail. His successor, Sardar Deljit Singh Sahani, known widely as the Maharaja Isfahan, extended that legacy into new ventures, founding Bansi Pars in 1971, Iran’s first modern supermarket, and building ties with business leaders, diplomats and public figures across decades – ties that still shape how ARES conducts business today.

It was against this backdrop that Ranbir Sahani founded ARES thirty-five years ago, drawing on a lifetime immersed in Isfahan’s rug-making tradition to build a house capable of meeting the expectations of the world’s most discerning clients. We have walked away from substantial orders rather than reproduce a design created for another client, because these were never contractual obligations, only promises we chose to keep. For the Sahani family, ARES is not only a manufacturer of fine rugs. It is a house of research, refinement, and stewardship.

Behind ARES
An Indian born in Iran and a citizen of the United States, Ranbir is fluent in Farsi and deeply shaped by Persian culture. Trained as a Mechanical Engineer at IIT Roorkee, he began his career within his family's business, with interests spanning transportation, international trade, hospitality, real estate and organised retail.

Before founding ARES, Ranbir co-founded Hi-Tech Sea Harvesters in Madrid, in partnership with a German engineering company, a venture into fisheries, maritime trade and international seafood distribution, supported by specialised marine vessels with aviation capabilities.

Ranbir brings a rare global perspective to the world of rugs. He personally sources raw materials from shepherds and producers across the world, combining engineering precision with material intelligence and a lifelong respect for craftsmanship. Over more than three decades, he has built one of the industry's most extensive texture libraries, positioning ARES not simply as a manufacturer, but as a house dedicated to research, refinement and enduring craft.
Before returning to India, Manav spent the past decade across nine cities in the United States, Europe, and Asia, building an independent career at the intersection of entrepreneurship, product, engineering, and design. His experience spans Fortune 500 companies including HP and ServiceNow, as well as a San Francisco-based AI venture backed by over $7M in venture capital, where he led a team of 15+ software and AI engineers in developing and launching its flagship product for C-suite leaders at multiple billion-dollar public companies.

Manav holds dual master’s degrees from Harvard’s Engineering and Design Schools, with collaborative coursework at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He also studied Human-Computer Interaction, Data Science, and Business at UC San Diego, graduating with distinction among the top 1% of his class.

Sustainability
Every rug begins with natural fibres and plant-based dyes, sourced directly from farmers across India, Iran and Nepal. Our energy and water needs are met largely by in-house solar infrastructure and rainwater harvesting, reducing our dependence on external resources at every stage of production.
People
Women make up a significant share of our workforce, among the highest of any employer in the region, working across design, quality control and production floors. When someone shows promise, we invest further: sponsoring courses and certifications at outside institutions to sharpen skills they bring back to their work here.
