RAW MATERIAL

Ranbir Sahani has spent decades scouring the old world for the finest fibres. Lanolin-rich wool from Iran, Turkey, Tibet, Mongolia and Afghanistan. Mohair from South Africa. Natural silk from East and South India. Cashmere from Afghanistan. Jute from Eastern India. Hemp from Nepal. Cotton from Egypt.

Years of research and a deep understanding of how fibres behave led us to develop our own blends. From a library of over 500 yarn types, we combine wool, silk, cashmere, jute, cotton and hemp using different spinning techniques, creating yarns that exist nowhere else. We have also pioneered the use of recycled materials converted into yarn for rug making.

DYEING

Colour. From pomegranate shells and walnut rinds.

We hold every dye we use to the highest standards of colorfastness and sustainability. All yarns are mordanted before dyeing to ensure the colour bonds permanently to the fibre. We offer over 100 natural colours, sourced as carefully as the fibres themselves - madder from Yazd in Iran, pomegranate from Afghanistan, indigo from India.

Where the brief demands it, we also work with chrome, acid and VAT dyes. Every colour decision is made in-house. Not one stage of this process leaves our hands.

THE MILL

Woven, washed, finished. All under one roof.

All our yarns are hand spun and hand carded, strengthening the fibre, building a natural patina, and producing the abrash and organic character that machine spinning cannot replicate. We have developed our own hand carding machines to achieve a spin that was last common several centuries ago.

Our weavers work across 150 oversized looms, entire generations of expertise on every piece. The finishing recipe for each texture has been individually chronicled,  dusting, clipping, washing, stretching, binding, fringing. Most rugs are washed three to four times. The process is complete only when the finished object matches exactly what was proposed.

There is no request we cannot accomodate

Our complete vertically integrated facilities give us the ability to customise and control quality at every level- fibre selection, yarn construction, colour dyeing, texture, scale.

There is no stage of production we do not directly control, which means there is no request we cannot accommodate. If you can describe what you want, we have the infrastructure and the techincal knowlegde to build it.

The Color Lab

Every color is developed in our in-house lab, tested for colorfastness under multiple chemicals, and checked under different light sources - daylight, tungsten, fluorescent, UV.

What you specify is what you receive. We offer over 100 natural colours, and because every stage happens here, any colour can be matched, modified, and reproduced with precision.

Our values

Confidentiality

A design made for one client is never duplicated for another customer.

Integrity

We will never approach your customers directly and we do not work with competing retailers. Every relationship we have is built on the understanding that your trust is not transferable.

Transparency

We will transparently communicate the cost of raw materials used and their source, and collaborate with you to lower costs without changing the look and feel, if needed.

It is simply how we work, and the reputation we have built this business on.

Once people work with us, they tend to stay.

People

Ranbir Singh Sahani
FOUNDER & MANAGING DIRECTOR

Ranbir Sahani founded ARES thirty-five years ago with one intention — to make the best rugs in the world. Born in Isfahan, trained as a Mechanical Engineer at IIT Roorkee, fluent in Farsi, he sources raw materials personally from shepherds across five countries and has built a texture library that no manufacturer in the industry has come close to matching.

Manavbir Singh Sahani
DIRECTOR

Manavbir Sahani spent a decade across nine cities on three continents — Fortune 500 companies, a VC-backed AI startup in San Francisco, and projects across rural South Asia. A dual masters from Harvard and MIT, and a UC San Diego undergraduate degree in the top one percent of his class. He came back to ensure ARES meets the same uncompromising global standards he was held to abroad.
